“Black boys fence!”—both an affirmation and an invitation—both a truth and an offer to try something new, is an organization created in 2023 to inspire and mentor young Black kids to take up the sport of fencing. Our mission? To dismantle real and perceived barriers and present fencing as an accessible and inclusive activity, further diversifying the sport, and providing a unique avenue for personal growth for all.

I took up the sport of fencing when I was ten years old. Over time, however, I noticed there were very few fencers who looked like me. I rejected the narrative that Black kids were simply not interested in fencing. I realized that many kids of color have simply not been exposed to fencing, as it is often perceived as an elite sport, cloaked in the mystique of aristocratic tradition.

BBF expands access to the sport of fencing by offering:
• Youth Workshops
• School Partnerships
• Storytelling (live readings of “Scott’s Fantastic Fencing Journey”)

We mentor young, aspiring fencers, support student-led fencing clubs, and consult on inclusive programming. Our outreach includes live fencing demos, author visits, beginner’s fencing courses, gear donations, and panels on equity, entrepreneurship, and representation—empowering youth to lead, fence, and dream boldly.

When is the right age to begin fencing?

I took up the sport of fencing when I was ten years old. Kids can begin by finding a fencing club near them to check their age limits. Some clubs start as early as five years old.

Not at all! Black Boys Fence, which is an affirmation, is also an invitation. We welcome all youth who are interested in the sport of fencing. We are proud to create an inclusive and supportive environment for kids of all genders, backgrounds, and identities. Our mission is to expand access to fencing and empower underrepresented communities to join in the fun—everyone is welcome on the strip!
